Western Australian Premier Mark McGowan has suggested that Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and other state leaders visit China and meet with President Xi Jinping to demonstrate a return to harmonious and productive relations with Australia’s largest trading partner. McGowan, currently on a tour of China, has been vocal in his support for stronger economic ties with Beijing and critical of talk of a “Cold War.” McGowan suggested that the premiers could fan out across China to cover more ground. Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce criticized McGowan’s suggestion, citing China’s human rights abuses and territorial disputes. McGowan also made headlines for badmouthing a federal Liberal Party MP while in China.
