A settlement of $14.7 million has been reached in a class-action lawsuit against the Montreal Roman Catholic archdiocese for victims of sexual abuse by priests and lay employees since 1940. The lead plaintiff was a victim of Brian Boucher, who was defrocked and jailed in 2019 for sexually abusing two boys under his supervision. The settlement covers diocesan priests, but not those belonging to religious orders. The settlement will need to be approved by Quebec Superior Court, with a limit on the number of victims who can sign up. The settlement covers a maximum of 123 victims, but the number could be higher. The archdiocese welcomed the settlement and hopes it will help victims in their healing process.
