A retired member of the Canadian Armed Forces is seeking $11 million in damages from the CAF and the Canadian government due to what he believes was a negligent investigation into the attempted murder of his children by his former spouse. The father, who resides in Alberta, claims that his ex-wife set fire to her home intentionally, while she and their three children were sleeping in July 2015, after attempting to sedate them with cold medicine. He alleges that the investigation into the incident was flawed and that he was incorrectly identified as a suspect for having started the fire. Until the mother’s eventual conviction for attempted murder and arson, the father maintained that the investigation was conducted wrongly and falling short of due diligence. As such, he is seeking damages from the CAF and the federal government for failing to carry out a thorough investigation. The children and their father continue to suffer psychological and emotional injuries.
