The US military evacuated embassy officials from Sudan on Sunday as the country’s rival generals fought for control for a ninth day. Fighting broke out in Omdurman, despite a declared truce for the three-day Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr. Thick black smoke filled the sky over Khartoum’s airport, while the military allegedly unleashed airstrikes on the upscale neighbourhood of Kafouri, north of Khartoum. After a week of battles, US special forces evacuated some 70 embassy staffers from Khartoum to an undisclosed location in Ethiopia, while other countries scrambled to evacuate their citizens and diplomats. The fighting between the Sudanese armed forces and the Rapid Support Forces has left more than 400 people dead, including 264 civilians, and more than 3,500 wounded. The conflict has left millions of Sudanese stranded at home, hiding from explosions, gunfire, and looting, without adequate electricity, food or water.
