A fire at an Italian restaurant in the Salamanca neighbourhood of Madrid left two people dead and 12 others injured on Friday night. The deceased included a restaurant worker and a patron, according to Madrid mayor Luis Martinez-Almeida. Firefighters were alerted soon after the fire broke out, which was believed to have been caused by a waiter who accidentally set fire to the pizza he was preparing. Emergency services reported that the restaurant’s location near a fire station helped quicken the response time. However, the flames started near the main exit, which made it difficult for diners to escape. The incident is currently under investigation by local authorities.
