British diplomats and their families have been evacuated from Sudan by the British military due to the violent conflict between the Sudanese army and a paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak expressed his gratitude for the commitment of diplomats and bravery of military personnel in carrying out the complex operation. Defence Secretary Ben Wallace confirmed that the evacuation involved more than 1,200 personnel from the British Army, Royal Navy, and the Royal Air Force, working alongside allies. The government has temporarily closed the British embassy in Khartoum and relocated diplomatic functions to a nearby post. The safety of British nationals in Sudan remains the government’s top priority. The UK lacks the military footprint to conduct a large-scale evacuation similar to Operation Pitting in Afghanistan. The government is working to broker international support to end the bloodshed and urging the warring parties to lay down their arms and implement an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.
