Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital received a record-breaking $23 million (US $15.3 million) from its annual fundraising appeal. The fundraiser, which has been going on for almost a century, reported the highest amount of donations it has ever received. A live telethon in Victoria on Good Friday helped collect the donations, with rural and regional communities contributing more than $4 million (US $2.67 million). Activities that helped with the fundraising included a sheep shearathon, a family fun day, and a country music show. In addition, the federal and Victorian government offered $6 million (US $4 million) and $1 million (US $0.67 million), respectively, to the hospital’s cause. The donations go towards enhancing life-saving projects such as cardiac care and mental health support for sick children and those with chronic illnesses. Since its establishment in 1931, the Good Friday Appeal has raised a staggering $444 million (US $296 million) to fund the hospital’s research and care services.
