Pet owners are being warned to keep chocolate and hot cross buns away from their furry friends this Easter long weekend as they can be poisonous. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) in Victoria has issued a reminder that these sweet treats can be highly toxic to cats and dogs, and should be kept out of reach. Theobromine and caffeine in chocolate can be highly dangerous if ingested by pets, causing vomiting, diarrhoea, restlessness, excitement, nervousness, increased heart rate, and even death. Grapes, sultanas and raisins which are commonly found in hot cross buns can also cause kidney failure in dogs if ingested. If pet owners fear their animal may have eaten something they shouldn’t have, they are urged to seek veterinary attention immediately. Waiting for symptoms to arise is not advised, as the pet could already be in a life-threatening situation.
