According to employers, the impending strike by port workers in British Columbia will not have any effect on cruise ships in Vancouver, Prince Rupert, or Vancouver Island. The BC Maritime Employers Association has confirmed that cruise ships will still receive services, regardless of the strike. This exemption has been granted as a result of the federal mediation and conciliation service process. The International Longshore and Warehouse Union Canada has issued a 72-hour strike notice, set to begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, unless a resolution is reached or negotiations progress. Currently, there are three cruise ships docked in Vancouver and three in the Greater Victoria area. The strike notice affects approximately 7,400 terminal cargo loaders and 49 waterfront employers at more than 30 ports in British Columbia. The union cites contracting out, port automation, and cost of living as the main points of contention in the dispute. Federal ministers and British Columbia Premier David Eby have expressed concern and have called for both parties to resolve the situation to avoid any negative outcomes.
