A decision on the potential merger between the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia (SA) is expected to be announced soon. After several months of discussions and feasibility planning, the governing councils of both institutions have met to make their final decision, which is anticipated to be revealed over the weekend. In December 2022, the universities signed a statement of cooperation with the state government, which has strongly supported the merger. The plan is for the new merged entity to be called Adelaide University and to commence operations in 2026. With over 36,000 students based on domestic enrolments, it would become the largest university in Australia. Premier Peter Malinauskas has urged parliament to support the required legislation for the merger, framing it as an important test to determine the state’s commitment to making bold decisions for long-term success. However, a recent survey conducted by the National Tertiary Education Union found that university staff were largely skeptical about the proposed merger and its potential to enhance education or research. Only one in four staff members supported the plan, with 21 percent confident in its ability to improve education and less than one in three believing it would lead to better research. The union division secretary emphasized the significance and irreversible nature of this decision, urging the need to get it right.
