The Victorian government has reportedly spent $670 million (US$451.7 million) on consultants over the past five years, with a firm currently involved in a national tax scandal receiving almost $80 million (US$54 million). According to figures released by the state Auditor-General’s Office, consultancy giants PwC, Klynveld Peat Marwick Goerdeler (KPMG), Ernst & Young, Deloitte and Boston Consulting Group account for more than half of the total expenditure from mid-2017 to mid-2022. Victoria reportedly paid PwC $79.6 million (US$53.7 million) over the five years, including $17.8 million (US$12 million) in this year’s budget. The federal finance department has effectively barred PwC from taking on new work after former partner, Peter Collins, was accused of sharing confidential government information over multinational tax reform with clients and associates.
