Italy’s ambassador to Congo since 2017, Luca Attanasio, was among three individuals who were murdered in February 2021 on a World Food Program convoy that was on its way to visit a WFP school project in Rutshuru, situated in Congo’s eastern regional capital, Goma. Congolese authorities have now sentenced six men to life imprisonment for the murder. The conviction was handed down by a military tribunal in Kinshasa following a six-month trial. Vittorio Iacovacci, an Italian security officer, and Moustapha Milambo, the driver, were also killed. The prosecution claims that the defendants were part of a criminal gang and that they had abducted the ambassador, intending to demand a ransom. Five of the defendants are in custody, while the sixth is still at large.
