King Charles III has been officially crowned at Westminster Abbey, in front of world leaders and a global audience of millions. Archbishop Justin Welby placed the St. Edward’s Crown on Charles’ head as he sat on a 14th-century throne, making him the 40th monarch to be crowned at the abbey. His second wife, Camilla, was also crowned as queen. The event came more than seven months after Charles ascended to the throne following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. Although the ceremony was smaller than that of Queen Elizabeth’s in 1953, it still featured a parade of golden orbs, bejeweled swords and a scepter holding the world’s largest colorless cut diamond. Tens of thousands of people cheered the royal procession and military parade, while a handful protested against the monarchy.
