The UK government faced criticism for inviting Chinese Vice-President Han Zheng, who was responsible for human rights abuse in Hong Kong, to attend the coronation of King Charles III at Westminster Abbey. During his tenure from 2018 to March 2022, Han oversaw the imposition of the national security law in response to mass demonstrations, stifling debates and legitimizing punishment for dissent. Conservative Party members and Hong Kong’s former British governor, Chris Patten, have condemned the invitation, while the UK government maintained its stance on engaging with the superpower. Amnesty International UK called the decision “dangerous,” implying that the government is willing to overlook China’s heinous human rights record for diplomatic influence and trade. In a meeting with Han, Foreign Secretary James Cleverly discussed China’s issues with Hong Kong, Xinjiang, and Taiwan. Despite criticism, Downing Street emphasized the importance of continuing to engage with China and exploring cooperative measures on climate change and economics.
