The RCMP has provided further information on the suspect in the Saskatchewan mass stabbing that resulted in the deaths of 11 people and injuries to 18 others in 2022. During a live broadcast on social media on April 27, the RCMP revealed that two brothers, Myles and Damian Sanderson, were drinking and hyping each other up, with Damian telling a woman at a bar that they had a mission to accomplish. Following three days of selling cocaine, assaulting community members on James Smith Cree Nation, and drinking at local establishments, Myles killed more than a dozen people on September 4, 2022, after killing his brother. Myles was apprehended and died shortly after. RCMP officers had to process more than 42 crime scenes, interview over 250 witnesses, and collect 700 pieces of evidence. Myles killed victims of all ages, from young to elderly, in various locations. The RCMP were alerted to the attack only after a victim who had been attacked with scissors called the police at 5:40 a.m. local time on September 4. Police arrived at the scene at 6:18 a.m. Four danger alerts were subsequently issued by the police, but no one had reported the violent activity before the attack. The RCMP is currently conducting inquests into the murders and Sanderson’s actions, and there is an ongoing investigation into the Saskatoon Police Service and the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team. The James Smith Cree Nation has called for the formation of its own police force.
