The largest city in Alberta is taking steps to fight against cryptocurrency crimes with the help of a global blockchain data platform. The Calgary police have partnered with Chainalysis, a company that provides data, software, and research services to government agencies, financial institutions, cybersecurity firms, and now law enforcement organizations. As part of this partnership, the Western Canada Cryptocurrency Investigations Centre will be established to act as a focal point for police to stay informed about emerging cryptocurrency and cybercrime trends. Additionally, a new unit dedicated to cryptocurrency and blockchain-related investigations has been set up by the Calgary police. Cybercrimes, particularly cryptocurrency scams, can be challenging for law enforcement to fully investigate due to various factors such as international jurisdictions, sophisticated criminal techniques, and rapidly advancing technology. Last year, the Calgary police received reports of $13.9 million in losses to cryptocurrency-related crimes, with an additional $3.2 million reported so far this year. The police force expressed enthusiasm for the innovative partnership with Chainalysis and the opportunity to share cybersecurity expertise with private enterprise.
