Several former Canadian Olympians, including Hayley Wickenheiser, Tessa Virtue, and Clara Hughes, have been prohibited from entering Russia. This is in response to their endorsement of a statement calling for the exclusion of Russian athletes from the 2024 Paris Olympics due to the country’s invasion of Ukraine. The list comprises 333 Canadians, primarily politicians, who have been banned from Russia by the Russian Foreign Ministry. In February, 35 governments, including Canada’s, stated that they do not support the idea of allowing Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete until there is a workable neutrality model, and the COC shares this view. The International Olympic Committee is yet to decide whether or not to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes from the Paris Games, but it did recommend that individual athletes from both countries without military links be allowed to compete under neutral status.
