Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has renewed his call for Ukraine’s international allies to seize the resources of Russia and its cohorts, in a bid to bring an end to Russian impunity. Speaking via video call to the World Bank in Washington, Zelenskyy urged global leaders to take a harder stance against Russian aggression toward Ukraine, likening the Russian state to a terrorist organisation. He argued that the World Bank’s $411 billion report on losses to Ukraine as a result of the Russian invasion should be covered by freezing the assets of the Russian state and individuals connected to it. Despite a Swiss government ruling against the seizure of Russian assets, Zelenskyy remained convinced that the seizure was “realistic” and urged the West to move ahead with the confiscation. However, such a move seems unlikely, with Western leaders seeking to avoid a nuclear escalation and Swiss law prohibiting such an act.
