On May 4, the Biden administration announced several policies and programs related to artificial intelligence (AI). This follows a February executive order aimed at promoting “racial equity” in the government’s use of AI. The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) will release draft guidance on government use of AI, which aims to assist agencies in responsibly implementing AI to further their missions and equitably serve Americans. Additionally, the National Science Foundation will establish seven new national research institutes dedicated to AI, funded with $140 million. Prominent AI developers, including Google, Microsoft, and Nvidia, have agreed to participate in a public assessment of AI effectiveness and safety during the DEFCON 31 hacking conference in August. Vice President Kamala Harris will lead a meeting with leaders from Microsoft, OpenAI, Alphabet, and Anthropic to discuss the responsible use of AI. The administration aims to regulate AI and address “algorithmic discrimination.” The European Union (EU) has already taken steps to regulate AI, and the administration is open to greater coordination with the EU on this issue.
