The Canadian federal government is unsure how many employees are working remotely from home, according to Yves Giroux, the Parliamentary Budget Officer. During a Senate national finance committee hearing, Giroux stated that the government did not have the data on the number of remote workers. The government had recently agreed to end a strike after a proposal for a hybrid work model was presented by the Treasury Board. However, the Public Service Alliance of Canada had demanded the option of full-time work from home for some public servants. Despite a directive dated Dec. 15, 2022, from Treasury Board President Mona Fortier, suggesting that federal employees could work from home “40 to 60 percent of their regular schedule,” up to three days each week, there are no detailed answers or data about how many people are working remotely. A 2022 Public Works report suggests the government could save $1.3 billion annually if it cut its current office space by 40 percent.
