The University of Waterloo’s Vice-President for Research, Charmaine Dean, has decided to terminate the school’s partnership with Chinese tech giant Huawei after its contract expires this year in order to protect scientific research. This decision comes in light of warnings from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) that research collaborations can be used for espionage. Additionally, last year the Canadian Government banned Huawei from the country’s 5G wireless infrastructure due to security concerns such as links to the Chinese military. Despite the loss of funding, Dean hopes that Canadian businesses and the government can help fill the gap in research. The University of Waterloo has implemented new security assessment practices and follows the National Security Guidelines for Research Partnerships established by Ottawa in 2021 to stop foreign interference and espionage from harming Canada’s national security.
