Alberta NDP leader Rachel Notley has stated that if elected, she would consider bringing back Bill 6, a controversial bill that aimed to regulate farms and ranches, but was later repealed by the United Conservative Party (UCP) government. Notley said she remained concerned about the safety of farm workers in the province and criticized the UCP for undoing Bill 6 and removing the minimum wage for farm workers. However, she also acknowledged the need for consultation with farmers and employers in the sector. The original legislation introduced in 2015 added occupational health and safety regulations to all of Alberta’s farms and ranches, mandated workers’ compensation coverage for farmers, and made compliance with labor standards, such as vacation pay and minimum wage, mandatory for more than 40,000 farms. The bill caused uproar among rural landowners and resulted in protests. The UCP later introduced new legislation exempting small farms from employment standards regulations and allowing larger farms to choose private insurance or WCB.
