Russia has refused a request from the US embassy to visit Evan Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter who was detained in the country last month and accused of espionage. The US has labelled the detention wrongful. Moscow said that it has rejected the request in response to the US refusing visas for a group of Russian journalists. The foreign ministry summoned a senior US diplomat to formally protest over the issue. It was Russia’s turn to chair the UN Security Council and Moscow said it was angry about the visa snub. There has been no immediate comment from the US Embassy.
