Rachel Notley, the leader of the Alberta New Democrat Party, has identified addressing the healthcare crisis as her top priority. Her party has pledged to ensure that within ten years, up to one million more Albertans will be able to see a doctor within a day or two. Notley has promised to institute transformational changes to public healthcare, including having doctors work more evenings and weekends. Her party has also committed to a Healthcare Innovation Challenge Fund with an initial investment of $75 million over three years to bring innovative solutions to healthcare settings. Additionally, the NDP has pledged to protect the Canada Pension Plan and work to expand private workplace pensions and reform governance of public sector pension plans. Finally, the party has promised to lower costs for families and establish Family Health Teams to provide access to a family doctor and a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals. While plans to tackle other challenges such as housing remain under development, the NDP is committed to providing universal broadband internet access, hiring additional police officers and social workers, and keeping the RCMP in the province.
