Mélanie Joly, the Foreign Affairs Minister of Canada, has stated that Canadians who were evacuated from Sudan experienced a traumatic situation, and the government will provide all possible support to assist in bringing peace to the country.
During her visit to Kenya, Joly interacted with people who had fled from the violent situation in Sudan and held discussions with leaders from East Africa to discuss Canada’s role in promoting peace. In an interview with The Canadian Press from Nairobi, Joly emphasized on the importance of Canada’s involvement in the form of humanitarian aid, advocating for safe delivery of assistance, and uplifting the voices of civilians.
Joly also emphasized on the need for a vibrant civil society in Sudan to be heard in shaping the country’s future, as it has been facing brazen acts of violence while two rival generals fight for power. Joly expressed concern that the crisis could spread to neighboring countries. Her visit was also an opportunity to explore the potential of partnerships between Kenya and Canada in fields like vocational studies.
