Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith have criticized Federal Justice Minister David Lametti’s comments that suggest the federal government could consider revoking natural resource agreements with the provinces. Lametti made the comments at a meeting with various indigenous communities in Ottawa in early April. First Nations Grand Chief Brian Hardlotte and Chief R. Donald Maracle both raised concerns about the Natural Resources Transfer Agreements, which give the three Prairie Provinces constitutional control over natural resources. Moe and Smith called Lametti’s comments “outrageous” and a threat to provincial autonomy. Conservative MP Shannon Stubbs also condemned the comments, stating that the federal government should not interfere in provincial jurisdiction over natural resources. Former Opposition Leader and veteran politician Stockwell Day added that the current government is “road testing a number of frightening power grabs.” The justice minister’s office did not comment on the criticism.
