At least 12 people were killed and 50 others injured in two explosions at a counterterrorism police facility in northwest Pakistan on Monday, according to senior police officer Ataullah Khan. The initial blast was followed by a larger explosion in the Swat Valley district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Pakistani Taliban have been involved in similar incidents since ending their cease-fire with the government last year. Images from the scene showed destroyed cars, downed trees, and bloodied victims being carried into a local hospital on stretchers. Part of the counterterrorism police building collapsed, and rescue workers were able to recover both the deceased and the wounded. The picturesque Swat Valley was once under strict Sharia, or Islamic, rule before the army conducted a major operation and restored normalcy in 2007. The Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, is a separate group from the Afghan Taliban but is linked to them. As many of its leaders and fighters have taken refuge in Afghanistan since the Taliban takeover there last year, the TTP has become more active.
