Carla Foster, a 44-year-old woman, has been imprisoned for administering illegal abortion pills, resulting in the death of her unborn baby between 32 and 34 weeks gestation. She obtained the drugs from the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS), a well-known abortion provider, by deceiving them about the stage of her pregnancy during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. Foster gave birth to a non-breathing baby girl who subsequently died. In the UK, abortions are generally legal up to 24 weeks and can only be carried out in clinical settings. Foster was initially charged with child destruction but later pleaded guilty to administering drugs or using instruments to procure abortion, receiving a 28-month sentence with fourteen months in custody. Foster’s imprisonment has sparked outrage from some pro-choice campaigners and politicians, who are calling for the decriminalisation of abortion. Meanwhile, pro-life groups blame BPAS for promoting “DIY abortion” policies that led to the tragic death of Foster’s eight-month-old baby.
