An individual with a knife was reported at Kipling Collegiate Institute in Etobicoke, prompting a lockdown that lasted less than an hour. The Toronto Police Service (TPS) quickly responded and officers searched the school but did not find a suspect or any victims. Ontario has recently experienced several school lockdowns, including a situation where a student brought a water gun resembling a handgun to school. The Toronto District School Board explains that schools may be put into a “lockdown” or a “hold and secure” as a result of incidents around the school or emergency situations in the school vicinity. In the latter case, all students are required to remain in their classrooms with lights off and blinds closed while using cell phones is prohibited.
