The Chinese communist government’s threat to forcibly annex Taiwan has heightened this year, with frequent military incursions into Taiwan’s air and water territories. However, a post denouncing the government’s war efforts has gone viral on Chinese social media platforms and resonated with citizens. The post emphasizes that the common people, who are often forgotten in times of peace, are expected to fulfill their duty when the country is in trouble, although they do not receive the same benefits as officials who enjoy national privileges. Many netizens shared similar views and questioned why they should risk their lives when high-ranking officials’ children have already moved to the United States. Some suggested that corrupt officials should be sent to war instead. The huge disparity between rich and poor and the officials’ widespread corruption are other reasons why the post resonated with citizens. This is not the first time the Chinese public has expressed anti-war sentiment regarding the government’s mobilization efforts and war propaganda. The government has taken several measures to prepare for war, including new military Reserve Personnel Law and Criminal Procedure Law adjustments. China affairs commentator Li Dayu suggested that the people’s indifference and even willingness to assist the other side demonstrates that the government’s actions do not represent the will of the people.
