The Andrews Labor government plans to allocate $1 million to the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre for the development of new mRNA cancer treatments. Minister for Industry and Innovation Ben Carroll praised the center for its life-saving work and job creation potential. The funding will support research on infectious diseases and non-communicable diseases like cancer, metabolic diseases, degenerative diseases, and auto-immune diseases. Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre CEO Professor Shelley Dolan emphasized the significant potential of mRNA treatments for cancer patients worldwide. The $1 million grant is part of a larger $2.7 million fund for 16 mRNA projects targeting various diseases. The government has also invested $12.3 million to establish the center as a global leader in medical research and develop groundbreaking mRNA cancer treatments. Victoria is already at the forefront of mRNA technology in Australia and is building Moderna’s mRNA Vaccine manufacturing facility, which will have a capacity of producing 100 million vaccine doses per year. Premier Daniel Andrews expressed his belief that Victoria’s expertise in medical research and mRNA technology will lead to life-changing therapies for cancer patients. Victoria currently exports a significant portion of Australia’s pharmaceutical goods, making it a leader in advanced manufactured exports.
