The leader of the United Conservative party, Danielle Smith, has stated that she will not be campaigning on certain controversial issues ahead of the May 29 election. These issues include sovereignty legislation, a provincial police force, and an Alberta pension plan. During an interview on Global’s morning show in Calgary, Smith discussed various topics such as revitalizing the city’s downtown, public safety, and healthcare. While she introduced the sovereignty act and had her ministers look into other matters earlier, Smith said that those issues would be revisited after the election. Her focus now is on promoting things like a $10-a-day daycare and improving the health-care system. Smith has also promised an investment of $330 million in a new arena and entertainment district project in Calgary to address the “public safety crisis.” However, she stated that public disorder would not be tolerated and plans to invest in another hundred police officers in Calgary and Edmonton to ensure more publicly funded treatment beds and long-term supports are available for people dealing with addictions.
