The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has been considering banning the Fox News Network from Canadian distribution due to complaints from activist groups, and this action could have a chilling effect on discourse. While complaints should be considered, activist-based demands for censorship should be immediately dismissed. Allowing the CRTC to determine what is or isn’t news and who in Canada may view it could result in government censorship efforts damaging Canada’s democracy. The government is acting as a state censorship body, and citizens and producers will likely find ways around the government censors. The battle between authoritarians and empowered citizens shouldn’t have to happen, and press freedom is being incrementally obliterated with most citizens not realizing it.
