U.S. President Joe Biden and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese have announced a partnership between the two countries and Google on a $65 million project to connect multiple Pacific Island nations to the internet. The project will involve the construction of a submarine cable and will benefit countries such as Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu. The initiative aims to improve connectivity and access to global markets for these nations. It is part of the larger effort by the United States to strengthen deterrence in the Indo-Pacific region in response to growing Beijing presence. Both governments will also work with Google, APTelecom, and Hawaiki Nui to provide branching units for the Pacific Island nations.
The announcement of the submarine cable project is part of a new “innovation alliance” between the United States and Australia. It reflects the shared commitment of the two countries to a peaceful, open, stable, and prosperous Indo-Pacific. President Biden emphasized the importance of the alliance between the United States and Australia, describing it as an anchor to peace and prosperity in the region and around the world. The leaders also discussed other topics such as the Israel-Hamas conflict, clean energy, innovation, and the AUKUS partnership.
During his visit to the United States, Prime Minister Albanese also announced a $2 billion boost to critical minerals. Both countries have established a climate critical minerals and clean energy compact to enhance climate cooperation. Additionally, Microsoft announced a $5 billion investment in cloud computing and artificial intelligence in Australia, which includes training an AI workforce and building cyber security capabilities.
The visit included a private dinner between the two leaders, as well as an official state dinner at the White House with 300 guests. The joint press conference and various discussions between President Biden and Prime Minister Albanese highlight the deepening strategic cooperation between the United States and Australia.
