The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has announced that it will not be extending the tax filing deadline despite the ongoing labour dispute involving thousands of workers demanding better contracts, wages, and remote work options. The agency has assured Canadians that the strike will not hinder their ability to file their taxes electronically or on paper. The CRA has urged people to file their taxes before May 1, 2023, along with any balance owing. The Union of Taxation Employees (UTE) and the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) have been given the authority to strike by around 35,000 workers, putting them in a legal strike position from April 14. With the PSAC also receiving a strike mandate from 120,000 federal government workers employed by the Treasury Board, certain CRA services may be disrupted during the strike. The CRA has advised people to file their taxes as soon as possible, as there may be delays in processing income tax and benefit returns and increased wait times in contact centres.
