Residents of Rochester, a Victorian town that was hit hard by floods six months ago, are facing a difficult winter. Approximately half of the town’s residents are living in sheds and caravans as they work to rebuild their homes, while 150 people remain in temporary accommodation in nearby Elmore. The disaster caused around 1,000 homes to be inundated, and three businesses have closed their doors as a result. The situation has taken a toll on the mental health of residents, prompting calls for continuity of government support. The Victorian government said it continued to work with flood-affected communities in the aftermath, but the degree of future support won’t be known before the budget is announced in May.
