British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, has pledged to tackle grooming gangs in the UK, admitting that “cultural sensitivity and political correctness” have hindered efforts to bring child abusers to justice. Sunak announced new measures to combat child exploitation gangs, including the formation of a police-led taskforce, tougher sentencing and a legal duty on those working with children to report abuse. He made the announcement during a visit to Greater Manchester alongside Home Secretary Suella Braverman. The pair met with senior police officers, local authorities, and campaigners in child abuse prevention, including survivors of grooming gangs. Braverman’s comments over the weekend concerning “cultural values” of British Pakistani men were criticized by campaigners who fear that considering race may lead to new “blind spots.” Sunak, who acknowledged that grooming gang abuse was “still happening to too many of our young girls,” was not drawn on the issue of ethnicity.
