The Scottish Conservatives have urged for an investigation into the ongoing probe of Scottish National Party (SNP) fundraising fraud. Alexander Burnet, chief Whip of the Scottish Conservatives, wrote to the Presiding Officer Alison Johnstone calling for a new committee to investigate the SNP’s finances and the ongoing Operation Branchform investigation. Burnet’s letter cited the recent arrests of former SNP Chief Executive Peter Murrell and former SNP Treasurer Colin Beattie in April 2023. The investigation began in 2021 after complaints were filed against how independent referendum campaign donations were allocated. Police Scotland denied claims of any possible diversion of raised funds. Burnet referred back to the establishment of a committee to investigate the Scottish government’s handling of complaints against former First Minister Alex Salmond as a precedent to the Scottish Parliament’s responsibility to “uncover the truth.” The call follows the news that it took two weeks for a search warrant to be granted for Murrell’s home that he shared with his wife, former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon. The newly elected First Minister Humza Yousaf denied any government interference in the police investigation.
