An open letter signed by over 40 academics at Oxford University warns students against deplatforming gender-critical philosopher Kathleen Stock. Stock was invited to speak at the university but faced accusations of being transphobic due to her rejection of the notion that “trans women are women”. Evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins and other scholars have joined forces to oppose the student backlash, emphasising the importance of universities as places where controversial views can be discussed openly. The Oxford Union, which describes itself as the “last bastion of free speech”, will host Stock’s talk on 30 May, with protesting students able to challenge her views.
