On Sunday, a cafe in St. Petersburg, Russia was destroyed by an explosion which caused the death of a prominent military blogger, Vladlen Tatarsky. According to Russian news reports, Tatarsky was meeting with members of the public when a woman gave him a box containing a statuette that exploded. As a result, 25 people were injured, and 19 of them were hospitalized. Meanwhile, a patriotic Russian group that organized the event said that it had taken security measures, but “regrettably, they proved insufficient.” Thus far, no one has claimed responsibility, and the Interior Ministry is investigating everyone present in the cafe at the time of the blast. Since fighting began in Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Russia has experienced a series of fires, explosions, and apparent assassinations, with no obvious link to the conflict. Tatarsky, who had filed regular reports from Ukraine under the pen name Maxim Fomin, had more than 560,000 followers on his Telegram messaging app channel. In August, Russian commentator Darya Dugina died in a remotely controlled explosive device planted in her SUV, and Russian authorities blamed Ukraine for the attack while Kyiv denied any involvement.
