A prosecutor in the closed-door trial of Russian opposition figure Vladimir Kara-Murza Jr. has requested a 25-year sentence for treason and spreading false information about Russia’s military actions in Ukraine. Kara-Murza, a prominent journalist and Kremlin opponent, has been imprisoned since his arrest a year ago. The prosecutor has called for the sentence to be served in a strict regime prison colony. Kara-Murza’s charges stem from his speech to the Arizona House of Representatives, denouncing Russia’s military action in Ukraine. Another opposition figure, Ilya Yashin, was recently sentenced to 8½ years in prison on similar charges. Kara-Murza was an associate of Boris Nemtsov, a Russian opposition leader who was killed near the Kremlin in 2015. Kara-Murza has survived poisonings in 2015 and 2017, which he attributed to the Kremlin, but Russian officials have denied responsibility. Russia adopted a law criminalizing spreading false information about its military after the country’s troops entered Ukraine in 2014. This law has been used to stifle criticism of Russia’s actions.
