The Premier of Quebec, François Legault, considers the closure of the illegal border crossing at Roxham Road to be a “major victory for Quebec.” Legault expressed his thoughts in French on social media and thanked the Quebec government team for their efforts in putting pressure on the federal government. As a result of new rules negotiated between Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and U.S. President Joe Biden during Biden’s visit to Canada, the unofficial crossing between Quebec and New York state was closed on March 25th. The Safe Third Country Agreement (STCA) was modified, making it illegal for asylum-seekers to make a refugee claim at any point along the shared border, with a few exceptions. The Quebec crossing saw over 39,000 illegal arrivals in Quebec last year alone, according to Legault. The extension to the STCA also permits 15,000 migrants to enter Canada from the Western Hemisphere on a “humanitarian basis.” Legault commended three of his ministers and thanked Trudeau and Biden for their partnership in working to discourage unlawful border crossings.
