The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners is urging the government to make medicines more affordable and accessible. They suggest extending the length of prescriptions and allowing larger supplies of medicine to be prescribed at one time. They claim that a two-month supply would halve dispensing fees which cost $1.67 billion in 2021-2022. The college’s president, Dr. Nicole Higgins, also wants to streamline the Pharmaceutical Benefits Schedule prescribing system to allow doctors to focus on patient care rather than paperwork. The suggested reforms could save money for patients, the health budget, and taxpayers. Health Minister Mark Butler has said that upcoming budget measures will be announced in May.
