Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced that the advice of the secondary legal officer regarding the Indigenous voice will be made public. Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, who opposes the voice being enshrined in the constitution, has demanded that Albanese release the advice given by the Solicitor General to the cabinet. Albanese clarified that while the complete cabinet documents would not be released, Solicitor General’s perspective will be disclosed through the Attorney General Mark Dreyfus, which is the appropriate forum for such discussion. Albanese added that it was not appropriate to release cabinet documents, in line with the procedures followed by previous governments. Albanese also mentioned that the National voice would work with the state voices, ensuring rural and remote representation, gender balance, and proper representation of regions like the Torres Strait. The final model of the voice would be legislated if the upcoming referendum on the voice is passed later in the year.
