Two former high-ranking officials denied having any knowledge of a 2017 memo on Chinese regime interference during their testimony before the House of Commons Procedure and House Affairs Committee. Michael Wernick, former Clerk of the Privy Council, and Daniel Jean, former National Security Intelligence Advisor, both claimed to have no recollection of the memo in question. The memo, reportedly produced at the request of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s chief of staff Katie Telford, discussed the Chinese regime’s efforts to infiltrate and interfere in Canada’s democratic processes. Though Conservative lawmakers are calling for a public inquiry, the Liberal government has initiated various reviews of the matter, including an assessment by former governor general David Johnston. Opposition leaders have criticized Johnston’s appointment due to his connections to Trudeau and the Trudeau Foundation, which has accepted donations from individuals linked to the Chinese regime.
