Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre has written a letter to Twitter asking that Canadian public broadcaster CBC be labelled as “government-funded media” on the platform. Poilievre cited Twitter’s own policy on identifying such accounts and noted that CBC receives the majority of its funding from the federal government. Twitter has already labelled the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and US National Public Radio in this way. Elon Musk, owner of Twitter, has been asked by some users to label CBC and responded by calling for more granularity in editorial influence. CBC president Catherine Tait has accused Poilievre of driving criticism against the organization.
