Cold Lake, a city in Alberta, Canada, has decided against creating a rainbow-colored “pride” crosswalk after over 50 percent of the public said they were not in favor of the idea following a public consultation. In February, the public was asked to provide feedback on a pride crosswalk in support of LGBTQ, and potentially a “7 Feathers” indigenous symbol crosswalk. The rainbow crosswalk was requested by Lakeland Safe Space Community to bring awareness of the Pride Group within the community. The city council heard that public responses that were antagonist to individuals or organizations were discarded, and the consultation process locked people out if they were not in favor of the crosswalk. 44.3 percent of respondents were in favor of the indigenous crosswalk, and fewer than 39 percent of respondents were in favor of both the rainbow pride crosswalk and the 7 Feathers. After a brief discussion at a meeting in March, the matter of pride crosswalks was deferred indefinitely.
