The Anarchist coffee shop, which operated on a “pay what you can” model, will be closing after just one year of operation due to insufficient revenue. Owner Gabriel Sims-Fewer announced the closure on the shop’s website, citing a lack of generational wealth and the failure to embrace capitalism. The “pay what you can” model proved unsustainable as the cost of drip coffee was subsidized by more expensive drinks. Sims-Fewer, a white cisgender queer man, offered to compensate for his privileged position by hiring people from minority identities. The shop’s closure follows a July 2021 employee revolt at Mina’s World, a queer-owned café in Philadelphia. Employees accused the owners of systemic employer opposition and exploitation, leading to the shop’s eventual closure.
