The Paris Prosecutor’s Office is investigating allegations against Apple that claim the company deliberately makes its devices obsolete in order to compel users to purchase newer models. The investigation began in December 2022 after advocacy group Halte a L’Obsolescence Programme (HOP) filed a complaint citing concerns over deceptive marketing practices and programmed obsolescence. HOP alleges that Apple links spare parts, such as microchips and speakers, to specific generations of iPhones through serial numbers, making it difficult for third-party repair services to use generic components. As Apple phases-out older models, corresponding spare parts become unavailable, putting pressure on customers to buy newer devices. HOP also claims that Apple can detect unauthorized repairs on iPhones and diminish their performance remotely, incentivizing users to opt for new models. The advocacy group is calling on Apple to guarantee the right to repair its devices. Apple has been fined in France, Italy, and Russia for similar practices.
