The B.C. government is initiating a class-action lawsuit against McKinsey and Co. for their alleged “false, reckless, and deceptive marketing campaigns” that increased opioid sales. The federal government may also join the lawsuit if it gets certified next year. The lawsuit claims that McKinsey contributed to British Columbia’s addiction epidemic, which harmed public health and safety and caused many deaths. Health Canada did not confirm its participation in the lawsuit. Court documents filed in February by McKinsey denied any connection between the consulting firm and the opioid crisis. McKinsey has been awarded over $100 million worth of contracts since 2015 by the Liberal government. Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre said he would sue large pharmaceutical companies for their role in Canada’s addiction crisis if elected prime minister in the future.
